RITES OF PASSAGE PROGRAM

The Egbe Iwa Odo ‘Kunrin/ Odo ‘Binrin (Society of Young Men/Young Women of Character) was founded in 2003 in Brooklyn New York. Our mission is to help African American and Latino youth navigate the situations they face as teens, and give them life skills to be successful adults. We do this in two primary ways. First, there are workshops in the practical skills: budgeting, goal setting, cooking, carpentry, and dealing with the police that are necessary to be able to function as adults. No less important are the self building skills: self esteem, confidence, age appropriate interaction with the opposite sex, qualities to look for in a life partner, spirituality, all intended to give a strong, well rounded base in oneself.
The heart of the program is mentoring, and building connections both with elders and peers. Each yearlong class is designed to foster strong life long bonds between the youth involved, and with the adults who mentor and guide them. We are very proud of our graduates, not only seeing how they have gone on to accomplish in various ways but also in terms of how much they remain in close contact with each other and with the program. We have had graduates go on to be successful in high school and college as well as return to the program as mentors.
